To investigate the origin and metabolism of the intermediates that occur in blood during phototherapy of neonatal jaundice, serum from irradiated homozygous Gunn rats was injected intravenously into other homozygous Gunn rats fitted with bile fistulas, and the excretion of pigment in the bile of the recipient rats was studied. In some experiments the donor rats were labeled with [14C]bilirubin; in others the recipient rats were labeled. Injection of donor serum from irradiated rats caused a transient burst of pigment excretion in the bile of the recipient rats. However, simultaneous bursts of pigment and 14C excretion were observed only when the donor rat was labeled and the recipient rat was not, and not when the donor rat was unlabeled and the recipient rat was labeled. In addition, there was simultaneous transient enhanced excretion of pigment and label when labeled recipient rats were exposed briefly to blue light. We conclude that (a) the phototherapy intermediates previously detected spectroscopically in serum are formed from bilirubin and are excreted in bile independently of bilirubin; (b) the enhanced excretion of pigment in bile during phototherapy is not caused by complex formation between bilirubin and photoproducts, or by liver damage produced by photoproducts or light.

Introduction: Grafts with alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) subjected to prolonged cold ischaemia from donors after brain death (DBD) are typically unsuitable for transplantation. Here, we investigated the role of growth hormone (GH) in livers with ALD from DBDs and its relationship with vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) and VEGFB.
Methods: Livers from rats fed ethanol for 6 weeks and with brain death (BD) were cold stored for 24 h and subjected to reperfusion.

Background: Although bariatric and metabolic surgical methods, including duodenal-jejunal bypass (DJB), were shown to improve metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in clinical trials and experimental rodent models, their underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The present study therefore evaluated the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of action of DJB in rats with MASLD.

Purpose: To mitigate ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) triggered in solid organ transplant procedures, we aimed to evaluate the effects of multi-organ abdominal ischemic preconditioning (MAIP) in the context of renal IRI.
Methods: An experimental kidney transplant model was conducted. Rats were divided into three groups: an intervention free basal group from which physiological data was collected; a control group (CT), which consisted of transplanted animals without MAIP; and a treated group, in which a MAIP protocol was implemented in the donor during the procurement of the left kidney, monitoring the recipient for 24 hours.

Currently, the barrier to successful lung transplantation is ischemia and reperfusion injury, which can lead to the development of bronchiolitis obliterans. Paclitaxel and methotrexate are drugs known to inhibit cell proliferation and have anti-inflammatory effects, and the association of these drugs with cholesterol-rich nanoparticles has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of other transplanted organs. Thirty-three male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into 3 groups: Basal group, no intervention; Control group, received only nanoparticles; Drug group, paclitaxel and methotrexate treatment.

Background: The gold standard of care for patients with severe peripheral nerve injury is autologous nerve grafting; however, autologous nerve grafts are usually limited for patients because of the limited number of autologous nerve sources and the loss of neurosensory sensation in the donor area, whereas allogeneic or xenografts are even more limited by immune rejection. Tissue-engineered peripheral nerve scaffolds, with the morphology and structure of natural nerves and complex biological signals, hold the most promise as ideal peripheral nerve "replacements".
Aim: To prepare allogenic peripheral nerve scaffolds using a low-toxicity decellularization method, and use human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) as seed cells to cultivate scaffold-cell complexes for the repair of injured peripheral nerves.
