Snakebite envenoming remains a devastating and neglected tropical disease, claiming over 100,000 lives annually and causing severe complications and long-lasting disabilities for many more. Three-finger toxins (3FTx) are highly toxic components of elapid snake venoms that can cause diverse pathologies, including severe tissue damage and inhibition of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, resulting in life-threatening neurotoxicity. At present, the only available treatments for snakebites consist of polyclonal antibodies derived from the plasma of immunized animals, which have high cost and limited efficacy against 3FTxs.

Phenolic compounds are prevalent in domestic and industrial effluents, leading a serious environmental hazard. Paper-based analysis device mediated by nanozymes has shown great potential in portable visual determination of phenolic compounds in the environment. In this work, we used nicotinic acid derivatives such as pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid, 2-methylnicotinic acid and 2-aminonicotinic acid by coordinating copper (II) acetate monohydrate coordination to obtain Cu2-COOHNA, Cu2-CHNA, Cu2-ANA nanozymes with laccase-activity.

Synthesis of harmaline N-9 derivatives and investigation of in vitro anticancer activity.

Bioorg Med Chem Lett

January 2025

School of Chinese Materia Medica, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Beijing 102488 China. Electronic address:

Harmaline as a natural compound possessed a wide range of pharmacological activities. In this study, 22 novel harmaline-based derivatives were synthesized and screened for in vitro anti-proliferation activity against three cancer cell lines, HCT116, MCF7, and MGC803. The modification site was at the position N-9 of harmaline.

The synthetic availability and wide range of biological activity of hydrazides and hydrazones make them attractive subjects for investigation. In this study, we focused on synthesis of 2-methyl-5-nitro-6-phenylnicotinohydrazide-based hydrazones derived from the corresponding substituted aldehydes. The structure of the obtained compounds was studied using NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations.
