The aim of this work is to incorporate lanthanide-cored upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) into the surface of microengineered biomedical implants to create a spatially controlled and optically releasable model drug delivery device in an integrated fashion. Our approach enables silicone-based microelectrocorticography (ECoG) implants holding platinum/iridium recording sites to serve as a stable host of UCNPs. Nanoparticles excitable in the near-infrared (lower energy) regime and emitting visible (higher energy) light are utilized in a study.

Background: αδ proteins regulate membrane trafficking and biophysical properties of voltage-gated calcium channels. Moreover, they modulate axonal wiring, synapse formation, and trans-synaptic signaling. Several rare missense variants in CACNA2D1 (coding for αδ-1) and CACNA2D3 (coding for αδ-3) genes were identified in patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Fibrotic cardiomyopathy represents a significant pathological condition characterized by the interaction between cardiomyocytes and fibroblasts in the heart, and it currently lacks an effective cure. In vitro platforms, such as engineered heart tissue (EHT) developed through the co-culturing of cardiomyocytes and fibroblasts, are under investigation to elucidate and manipulate these cellular interactions. We present the first integration of mathematical electrophysiological models that encapsulate fibroblast-cardiomyocyte interactions with experimental EHT studies to identify and modulate the ion channels governing these dynamics.

: Amyloidosis is a disorder characterized by the abnormal folding of proteins, forming insoluble fibrils that accumulate in tissues and organs. This accumulation disrupts normal tissue architecture and organ function, often with serious consequences, including death if left untreated. Light-chain amyloidosis (AL) and hereditary transthyretin-type amyloidosis (hATTR) are two of the most common types.

Although hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is used to treat systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), it is associated with retinal toxicity. Early diagnosis can prevent the further progression of HCQ-associated retinopathy by discontinuing HCQ treatments. This study aimed to evaluate the early diagnostic parameters in patients with SLE treated with HCQ and identify the best approach using multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) and swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) to reflect subclinical retinal toxicity.
