Antemortem diagnosis of amelanotic metastatic melanoma to jejunum was made in a 35-year-old white man, who is still alive and healthy. Electron microscopy, in addition to finding premelanosomes, revealed virus-like intranuclear inclusions. Nuclear pockets and junctions of endoplasmic reticulum were also observed.

A novel herpesvirus in blue penguins putatively associated with myocardial degeneration and necrosis.

J Vet Diagn Invest

December 2024

Zoological Health Program, Wildlife Conservation Society, Bronx Zoo, Bronx, NY, USA.

We identified a novel herpesvirus in 2 deceased captive blue penguins (). Moderate-to-severe myocardiocyte atrophy and necrosis, and eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies (INIBs), were seen in myocardiocytes in one bird; reticuloendothelial (RE) cell INIBs and multifocal RE cell necrosis were seen in both birds. The histologic findings were suggestive of viral infection.

Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a rare progressive neurodegenerative disease with a characteristic pathological feature of eosinophilic hyaluronan inclusions in the nervous system and internal organs. The identification of GGC-repeat expansions in the Notch 2 N-terminal like C (NOTCH2NLC) gene facilitates the accurate diagnosis of NIID. Due to its rareness and high clinical heterogeneity, the diagnosis of NIID is often delayed or missed.

Background: Fowl adenovirus (FAdV) is a globally distributed virus that inflicts significant economic losses on the poultry industry. The study aimed at pathological investigation, molecular characterization, isolation, and pathogenicity determination of FAdV from commercial poultry.

Methods: A total of 86 liver samples were collected from 80 commercial chicken farms.

Article Synopsis
  • The NOTCH2NLC gene is linked to several neurological disorders through expansions of GGC repeats in its 5' untranslated region, which can lead to conditions like Parkinson's, dementia, and tremors.
  • The study used cellular models and CRISPR-Cas9 engineered mice with specific GGC repeat variations to investigate the effects of these repeats, particularly focusing on those with serine insertions.
  • Results showed that a specific intermediate repeat with serine insertion caused mitochondrial dysfunction and neurotoxicity, leading to PD-like symptoms in mice, including neuronal loss and behavioral impairments.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to characterize the circulating Peste des Petits Ruminants virus (PPRV) from slaughtered goats and conduct a phylogenetic analysis of the N gene of PPRV.

Materials And Methods: A total of 196 slaughtered goats were investigated at the marketplaces of Mymensingh division from January 2019 to March 2021. Lungs, spleen, and mesenteric lymph nodes were collected for histology and molecular study.
