In 7 cases of fracture of the humerus occurring in arm wrestlers, each patient sustained a simple spiral fracture of the distal third of the humerus. No patient had any neural or vascular compromise. Three patients underwent open reduction and internal fixation with 2 screws, at which time, muscle was found to be interposed between the fracture fragments. The other 4 patients were treated in hanging arm casts. All of the fractures united. Of the 41 cases of this injury reported in English medical literature there were 5 patients with radial nerve palsy and 16 patients who had had operative treatment of the injury. Because of the possibility of participants sustaining such an injury, arm wrestling should not be considered a totally benign sport.

Concussion may affect sport performance capabilities related to the visual perception of environmental events, rapid decision-making, and the generation of effective movement responses. Immersive virtual reality (VR) offers a means to quantify, and potentially enhance, the speed, accuracy, and consistency of responses generated by integrated neural processes. A cohort of 24 NCAA Division I male wrestlers completed VR assessments before and after a 3-week VR training program designed to improve their perceptual-motor performance.

Humeral Fracture in a Female Arm Wrestler: A Patient-Centered Focused Review.

Clin Med Res

June 2023

Division of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

Humeral fractures in arm wrestling are rarely reported entities in the orthopedic literature and can present with significant pain and debilitation. These injuries are even more uncommon in female practitioners of the sport. Rotational forces applied to the humerus during competition can result in the transmission of stress into the distal part of the humerus, thereby causing a spiral fracture.

Background: In the sport of arm wrestling, the great rotational force is applied to the upper extremity, which can result in muscle and tendon injuries in the shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints, and even bone fractures. The aim of this study was to present the treatment modalities, functional outcomes, and return to sport after arm wrestling injuries.

Methods: A retrospective evaluation was made of the trauma mechanisms, treatment modalities, clinical outcomes, and time of return to sports of patients admitted to our hospital with an arm wrestling injury between 2008 and 2020.

Assessment of Standing Multi-Frequency Bioimpedance Analyzer to Measure Body Composition of the Whole Body and Limbs in Elite Male Wrestlers.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

November 2022

Department of Research and Development, Starbia Meditek Co., Ltd., Taichung 40227, Taiwan.

We investigated differences in body composition measurements for the whole body and limb segments in elite male wrestlers between results of multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analyses (MF) and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Sixty-six elite male wrestlers from Taiwan were recruited. Wrestlers' body fat percentage (PBF), whole body fat-free mass (FFM), whole body lean soft tissue mass (LSTM), and fat-free mass of arms, legs and trunk (FM, FFM, FFM) were measured by MF and DXA, and analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient and Bland-Altman plot.
