Background: Emphysematous esophagitis is a very rare disease and there are only a few previous reports in the literature. Previously reported cases have resulted in emphysematous esophagitis following anterior cervical procedures or ingestion of hydrogen peroxide (HP). In this report, we describe a case in which a patient with emphysematous esophagitis accompanied by gastritis without the above predisposing factors was treated with conservative treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most prevalent type of sarcoma in humans, predominantly occurring in the stomach or small intestine, with over 5000 new cases diagnosed annually in the USA.
  • A study investigated the presence of bacteria within GISTs by analyzing 25 tumor samples from 24 patients using advanced genetic sequencing techniques.
  • Results showed that most samples had negligible bacterial presence, while two samples indicated normal intestinal bacteria, but only in tumors where the mucosal lining was disrupted.

An 80-year-old man underwent laparoscopic distal gastrectomy, D2 lymphadenectomy, and Billroth Ⅰ reconstruction for gastric cancer. The short gastric artery and vein were completely preserved. The patient developed a fever on the second postoperative day, and a blood test on the third day showed high inflammation findings, and contrast-enhanced CT scan revealed decreased gastric wall blood flow of the anal side of the remnant stomach.

Patients with advanced gastric and colorectal cancers have limited treatment options. Since mesothelin is highly expressed in these tumour types, we evaluated the therapeutic benefits of anti-mesothelin hYP218 CAR T cells alone, and in combination with anti-PD1 antibody, pembrolizumab. GEPIA analysis was performed using human gastric (n = 408) and colon cancer tumours (n = 275) in TCGA database, to evaluate mRNA expression of mesothelin, compared to normal tissues.

Lessons learned from 150 total gastrectomies for prevention of cancer.

J Gastrointest Surg

January 2025

Surgical Oncology Program, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, United States. Electronic address:

Background: Prophylactic total gastrectomy (PTG) is performed in carriers of CDH1 pathogenic and likely pathogenic (P/LP) variants and is becoming more frequent with broader use of germline genetic testing. There is an unmet need to standardize care and enhance outcomes among patients undergoing surgery for the prevention of gastric cancer.

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of 150 individuals with germline CDH1 P/LP variants who underwent PTG as part of a prospective natural history study from October 2017 to May 2023.
