The cryoprotection of the sheep erythrocyte intermediate EAC4 cells, used as reagent in titration of the first complement component, Gl, was investigated. The cryoprotective agents tested were untreated polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), purified PVP, neutralized PVP and a hydroxyethylated potato starch of high viscosity, Avelex 1030, hydrolyzed for 40 min. Recovery of EAG4 cells after thawing was 80–90 %, with best results using untreated, purified or neutralized PVP. The EAG4 cells frozen in the presence of untreated PVP showed, however, increased susceptibility to the hemolytic action of Gl, whereas cells frozen with purified or neutralized PVP or with Avelex 1030 gave titers similar to that obtained with fresh cells. Gl titrations with frozen and thawed EAG4 cells gave more reproducible results than those obtained when titrations were performed with fresh separately prepared cells.

Treating infected wounds is facing a serious challenge due to the rapid spread of antibiotic resistance worldwide. In the search for novel antimicrobial drugs, natural products often serve as a crucial resource. Plumbagin (PLB) is the most important natural active ingredient in the root of Plumbago zeylanica L.

Background: Studies have reported that repeated annual vaccination may influence the effectiveness of the influenza vaccination in the current season. The mechanisms underlying these differences are unclear but might include "focusing" of the adaptive immune response to older strains.

Methods: We established a 5-year randomized placebo-controlled trial of repeated influenza vaccination (Flublok, Sanofi Pasteur) in adults 18-45 years of age.

Silver nanoparticles with excellent biocompatibility block pseudotyped SARS-CoV-2 in the presence of lung surfactant.

Silver (Ag) is known to possess antimicrobial properties which is commonly attributed to soluble Ag ions. Here, we showed that Ag nanoparticles (NPs) potently inhibited SARS-CoV-2 infection using two different pseudovirus neutralization assays. We also evaluated a set of Ag nanoparticles of different sizes with varying surface properties, including polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-coated and poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG)-modified Ag nanoparticles, and found that only the bare (unmodified) nanoparticles were able to prevent virus infection.

The distribution of nanoparticles between aqueous and organic phases is universally considered as the starting point in predicting the fate and bioavailability of engineered nanoparticles in the environment. However, the theoretical basis for determining the distribution of nanoparticles in the immiscible water-oil system remains unclear. Here, for the first time, theoretical calculations were conducted to illustrate the underlying mechanism.

Electronic address:

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is extensively used in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but its efficacy is usually limited to secondary tumor hypoxia and other progressive exacerbation of the abnormal tumor microenvironment (TME). Herein, we synthesized polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)-coated CaO nanoparticles (CaO NPs) and applied them as a synergistic agent to improve the antitumor efficacy of TACE. After injection into the tumor, CaO NPs reacted with water to generate abundant oxygen, hydroxyl ions (OH), and calcium ions (Ca), thereby relieving tumor hypoxia, neutralizing acid, and overloading Ca to mediate antitumor effects.
