Microscopic Origin of the Spatial and Temporal Precision in Biological Systems.

Biophys Rep (N Y)

January 2025

Center for Theoretical Biological Physics, Rice University, Houston, Texas 77005, USA; Department of Chemistry, Rice University, Houston, Texas 77005, USA; Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Rice University, Houston, Texas 77005, USA. Electronic address:

All living systems display remarkable spatial and temporal precision, despite operating in intrinsically fluctuating environments. It is even more surprising given that biological phenomena are regulated by multiple chemical reactions that are also random. While the underlying molecular mechanisms of surprisingly high precision in biology remain not well understood, a novel theoretical picture that relies on the coupling of relevant stochastic processes has been recently proposed and applied to explain different phenomena.

Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA)-associated vasculitides are a group of rare diseases that cause inflammation of small to medium vessels. They comprise granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA). As the signs and symptoms are varied, the diagnosis of vasculitis is complex and challenging; however, there are type-specific clinical presentations that can be factored into the existing classification criteria.

Linear IgA bullous dermatosis (LABD) is a rare subepidermal blistering disorder characterized by the presence of linear IgA deposits at the basement membrane zone (BMZ) by direct immunofluorescence (DIF). This entity was first described by Chorzelski and Jablonska from Warsaw Center of Bullous Diseases, Poland. The disease affects children and adults, whereby they differ in terms of clinical picture and course.

Human intestinal spirochaetosis is caused by the colonisation of the luminal membrane of the colon and rectum by anaerobic spirochaetes belonging to the genus Brachyspira. The common method used for its diagnosis is routine haematoxylin and eosin staining of colonic and rectal biopsy samples. The clinical spectrum of human intestinal spirochaetosis is heterogeneous, ranging from asymptomatic colonisation to symptoms such as chronic mucosal diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, and abdominal pain.

Mechanism of Water Freezing in Solutions: Solutes Affect the Formation of Critical Ice Nuclei.

Nano Lett

January 2025

"The Belt and Road Initiative" Advanced Materials International Joint Research Center of Hebei Province, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Hebei University of Technology, Tianjin 300401, China.

The microscopic mechanisms by which solutes modulate water freezing are fundamental for controlling the freezing of various environmental and cryobiotic systems. Although our understanding of the initiation mechanisms of pure water freezing is becoming clearer, the microscopic pictures regarding ice nucleation in complex systems such as solutions still rely on theory assumption and empirical formulation. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that solutes modulate water freezing through affecting critical ice nucleus formation.
