In a retrospective cohort study, the observed mortality of employees of four United States carbon black producters was compared with that expected on the basis of population death rates of the states in which the plants were located. Of 190 deaths among carbon black workers, 29 were due to malignant neoplasms and 89 were due to heart disease. Observed deaths of workers did not exceed expectation in any of the diagnostic categories examined. The results of this study suggest that exposure to carbon black does not increase workers' risk of mortality from malignant neoplasms of heart disease above those of the populations from which they are drawn.

Exposure Contrasts of Women Aged 40-79 Years during the Household Air Pollution Intervention Network Randomized Controlled Trial.

Environ Sci Technol

January 2025

Division of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley, California 94609, United States.

Exposure to household air pollution has been linked to adverse health outcomes among women aged 40-79. Little is known about how shifting from biomass cooking to a cleaner fuel like liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) could impact exposures for this population. We report 24-h exposures to particulate matter (PM), black carbon (BC), and carbon monoxide (CO) among women aged 40 to <80 years participating in the Household Air Pollution Intervention Network trial.

Biochar for ameliorating soil fertility and microbial diversity: From production to action of the black gold.

Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, School of Engineering and Sciences, SRM University-AP, Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh 522240, India.

This article evaluated different production strategies, characteristics, and applications of biochar for ameliorating soil fertility and microbial diversity. The biochar production techniques are evolving, indicating that newer methods (including hydrothermal and retort carbonization) operate with minimum temperatures, yet resulting in high yields with significant improvements in different properties, including heating value, oxygen functionality, and carbon content, compared to the traditional methods. It has been found that the temperature, feedstock type, and moisture content play critical roles in the fabrication process.

Novel sustainable agricultural strategies that enhance soil nutrients and human nutrition are crucial for meeting global food production needs. Here, we evaluate the potential of "glacial flour," a naturally crushed rock produced by glaciers known to be rich in nutrients (P, K, and micronutrients) needed for plant growth. Our proof-of-concept study, investigated soybean ( var.

A photocatalytic superhydrophobic coating with p-n type BiOBr/α-FeO heterojunctions applied in NO degradation.

RSC Adv

Institute of Resources and Environmental Engineering, Shanxi University, Shanxi Yellow River Laboratory Taiyuan China

Coal combustion generates soot-type air pollution, and NO, as a typical pollutant, is the main haze-causing pollutant. The degradation of NO by means of photocatalytic superhydrophobic multifunctional coatings is both durable and economical. The precipitation method was employed to create a p-n type BiOBr/α-FeO photocatalytic binary system.

Semiconductor metal oxide gas sensors are widely used to detect ethanol vapours, commonly used in industrial productions, road safety detection, and solvent production; however, they operate at extremely high temperatures. In this work, we present manganese dioxide nanorods (MnO NRs) prepared via hydrothermal synthetic route, carbon soot (CNPs) prepared via pyrolysis of lighthouse candle, and poly-4-vinylpyridine (P4VP) composite for the detection of ethanol vapour at room temperature. MnO, CNPs, P4VP, and MnO NRs-CNPs-P4VP composite were characterised using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy.
