Male rape: offenders and victims.

Am J Psychiatry

Published: July 1980

In an analysis of 22 cases of male rape in a community setting, the gender of the victim did not appear to be of primary importance to some of the rapists, but for others, males appeared to be specific intended targets, and the rapists' assaults were an effort to deal with unresolved and conflictual aspects of their lives. For all offenders the sexual assault was an act of retaliation, an expression of power, and an assertion of their strength and manhood. The impact of rape on the male victims was similar to that on female victims, disrupting their biopsychosocial functioning; however, male rape appears to be underreported due to the stigma associated with it.

The rape and murder of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9, 2024, was a brutal crime but had nothing to do with patients or violence by patients or their attendants against health workers. The accused is a civic volunteer who is said to have frequented the hospital as a tout, fleecing patients by promising to get them a bed or help them get tests done for free or at discounted rates [1]. However, following the incident, the protests by doctors, mostly resident doctors' associations across the country, zeroed in on protection for doctors and health workers from violence and attacks by patients through a central law as one of their main demands [2].

This study explores evidence of a Reconstruction-era ethos in present-day treatment of youth of color accused of sexual assault. Specifically, we examined effects of perpetrator age and race on legal outcomes in 382 alleged child sexual abuse cases.

Violence has been analysed in silo due to difficulties in accessing data and concerns for the safety of those exposed. While there is some literature on violence and its associations using individual datasets, analyses using combined sources of data are very limited. Ideally data from the same individuals would enable linkage and a longitudinal understanding of experiences of violence and their (health) impacts and consequences.
