The increasing use of lithium (Li) in modern technology and medicine has raised up concerns in the scientific community due to the potential impact of this metal on the aquatic environment. Although several effects have been reported in different organisms, there is still scarce information concerning the mechanisms and chronic effects of Li toxicity in marine life. Our main objective is to determine biological effects of sub-lethal concentrations in Mytilus galloprovincialis at different biological organization levels using the biomarker approach.

Introduction: Nonconvulsive status epilepticus is a severe complication of lithium intoxication that requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. While conventional electroencephalography (EEG) remains the gold standard for diagnosis for nonconvulsive status epilepticus, its implementation in emergency settings can be challenging and time-consuming. We present a case in which simplified EEG with six electrodes enabled rapid detection and monitoring of nonconvulsive status epilepticus in lithium intoxication in the emergency setting.

Introduction: Lithium-induced neurotoxicity is almost always reversible but can cause irreversible neurological sequelae, namely the syndrome of irreversible lithium-effectuated neurotoxicity (SILENT). As there is no definitive treatment for SILENT, caution is required when administering lithium. Reports on the effect of lithium-effectuated neurotoxicity on cognitive function are limited.
