Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) is a unique low-density lipoprotein-like lipoprotein that is considered an independent and causal risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and calcific aortic valve stenosis. The Lp(a) molecule also contains apolipoprotein A and apolipoprotein B, which collectively promote atherosclerosis, thrombosis, and inflammation. Lp(a) is highly genetic and minimally responsive to nonpharmacological measures.

As asbestos fibers and other fine particles have been studied extensively to correlate physical and chemical properties with their potential for negative human health impact on inhalation, there remains no concise definitions for the individual particle types nor collective considerations of combined variabilities. Extensive studies relating negative health to asbestos morphology, chemistry, surface effects, and biodurability form general qualitative bins of what is more likely causative or less, but do not provide enough information to quantitatively dismiss particles with parameters outside any given range. Further, natural mineral species and accessory mineralization makes standardization of universally applicable reference materials nearly unobtainable.

Although overall atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) incidence has been declining in the United States, there is evidence that the incidence of ASCVD events in young adults is increasing. The early initiation of preventive therapies could result in a greater number of life-years saved, and therefore determining the appropriate way to identify high-risk young adults is becoming increasingly important. The coronary artery calcium (CAC) score, an established marker of coronary artery atherosclerosis, can improve discrimination for ASCVD risk beyond established risk prediction tools.

Background: Heart valve implantation in juvenile sheep to demonstrate biocompatibility and physiologic performance is the accepted model for regulatory approval of new biological heart valves (BHVs). However, this standard model does not detect the immunologic incompatibility between the major xenogeneic antigen, galactose-α-1,3-galactose (Gal), which is present in all current commercial BHVs, and patients who universally produce anti-Gal antibody. This clinical discordance leads to induced anti-Gal antibody in BHV recipients, promoting tissue calcification and premature structural valve degeneration, especially in young patients.
