A wide range of syphilis-related pregnancy complications are encountered in clinical practice. Active surveillance of the epidemiological situation in different countries and a series of retrospective data analyses allow for a comprehensive assessment of the feasible consequences of syphilis infection during pregnancy. The negative effects of infection on reproductive health are also described.

Encephalitis due to Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is a rare condition that primarily affects children and immunosuppressed patients. Diagnosing EBV encephalitis can be challenging due to its nonspecific clinical presentation and the lack of confirmatory tests. We present the case of a 66-year-old woman with a history of kidney transplantation who was admitted due to progressive subacute mental deterioration, preceded by vertigo and without fever.

High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is known as a late inflammatory mediator associated with lethal pathology. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is well known to cause Central Nervous System (CNS) infections, ranging from more common HSV-2 viral meningitis to the more rare and severe HSV-1 encephalitis. Here we present an atypical case of aseptic meningitis due to HSV-1. Intriguingly, despite the potential severity of HSV-1 infections, the patient had an uncomplicated course with only mild symptoms that resolved with conservative management alone.
