Newly formed playas, such as those resulting from the desiccation of Lake Urmia (LU) in northwest Iran, are significant global dust sources with implications for human health and the environment. Stabilizing these surfaces affordably can be achieved using locally sourced magnesium-enriched brine. To evaluate this approach, for LU playa, we examined the accumulation of ions, minerals deposition, and salt crust (Cr) formation in LU brine under both natural and laboratory conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • Enriched biochars, like potassium- and magnesium-enriched variants, can reduce heavy metal contamination in soil while enhancing microbial and enzyme activities.
  • The addition of biochar improved soil organic matter and significantly decreased arsenic availability, leading to better plant growth, particularly in basil.
  • Overall, the use of enriched biochars can enhance nutrient uptake and promote healthier plant development even in soils contaminated with arsenic.

The NLRP3 inflammasome is an essential component of the innate immune system, but excessive activation can lead to inflammatory diseases. Ion fluxes across the plasma membrane or from intracellular stores are known to regulate NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Deep-sea water (DSW) contains high concentrations of many mineral ions, which could potentially influence NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the impact of a magnesium-enriched diet on cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD), focusing on its potential to improve plasma magnesium levels and overall health outcomes.* -
  • Sixty client-owned cats with CKD were randomly split into two groups: one received a magnesium-enriched phosphate-restricted diet (PRD), while the other received a standard PRD. Results showed an increase in total magnesium in the magnesium group without negative side effects.* -
  • The magnesium-enriched diet led to better management of CKD-related issues, such as lower trends in ionized calcium levels and stable fibroblast growth factor-23 concentrations, suggesting this dietary modification could be beneficial for feline patients with CKD.*

The modified biochars have positive effects in reducing heavy metal toxicity for plants. However, the mechanism and extent of these effects on mitigating arsenic toxicity and plant performance are not clear. Thus, a pot experiment was conducted as factorial to evaluate the potential of fresh and enriched biochars with potassium and magnesium nano-sulfates [potassium-enriched biochar (K-BC), magnesium-enriched biochar (Mg-BC) in individual and combined forms] on reducing arsenic toxicity (non-contamination, 50, and 100 mg NaAsO kg soil) in basil plants.
