A three-alternative, forced-choice adaptive procedure, with suitable reinforcement, is appropriate for testing auditory sensitivity in young children. Data obtained using this rigidly specified test protocol support previous findings of reduced auditory sensitivity in young children.

Hearing is an active process in which listeners must detect and identify sounds, segregate and discriminate stimulus features, and extract their behavioral relevance. Adaptive changes in sound detection can emerge rapidly, during sudden shifts in acoustic or environmental context, or more slowly as a result of practice. Although we know that context- and learning-dependent changes in the sensitivity of auditory cortical (ACX) neurons support many aspects of perceptual plasticity, the contribution of subcortical auditory regions to this process is less understood.

The auditory system is unique among sensory systems in its ability to phase lock to and precisely follow very fast cycle-by-cycle fluctuations in the phase of sound-driven cochlear vibrations. Yet, the perceptual role of this temporal fine structure (TFS) code is debated. Background: Frequent and remote cognitive assessment may improve sensitivity to subtle cognitive decline associated with preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD). Our objective was to evaluate the feasibility, reliability, and construct validity of repeated remote memory assessment in late middle-aged and older adults.
Method: Participants were recruited from longitudinal aging cohorts to complete medial temporal lobe-based memory paradigms (Object-In-Room Recall [ORR], Mnemonic Discrimination for Objects and Scenes [MDT-OS], Complex Scene Recognition [CSR]) using the neotiv application on a smartphone or tablet at repeated intervals over one year.
