Aurokeratinate (Auro-Detoxin) was administered intramuscularly to patients with chronic rheumatoid arthritis, using two different dosage schedules and measuring serum gold concentration. (1) Using slowly rising doses (as generally practised) the gold level gradually rose to 3.2 microgram/ml after four weeks (before the ninth injection), without reaching cumulation equilibrium. Elimination from serum occurred during this phase, with a half-life of 3-5 days. When treatment was continued at about 25 mg gold twice weekly, the cumulation equilibrium was reached with a minimal value at 3.5 microgram/ml and a maximal one of 6 microgram/ml, elimination half-life then being increased to nine days. During the subsequent maintenance treatment with 65 mg gold once a month the serum-gold concentration fell to about 1 microgram/ml, maximal values being about 6 microgram/ml, with an elimination half-life of 11 days. (2) With a constant dose of about 25 mg gold twice weekly, cumulation equilibrium was reached after two weeks (3.4 microgram/ml before the fifth injection), while on 50 mg gold every 14 days as maintenance dose the serum concentration was between 2 microgram/ml minimally and 6 microgram/ml maximally. At the modified dosage the drug was well tolerated.

Collocated crystal sizes and mineral identities are critical for interpreting textural relationships in rocks and testing geological hypotheses, but it has been previously impossible to unambiguously constrain these properties using in situ instruments on Mars rovers. Here, we demonstrate that diffracted and fluoresced x-rays detected by the PIXL instrument (an x-ray fluorescence microscope on the Perseverance rover) provide information about the presence or absence of coherent crystalline domains in various minerals. X-ray analysis and multispectral imaging of rocks from the Séítah formation on the floor of Jezero crater shows that they were emplaced as coarsely crystalline igneous phases.

Extreme Zr stable isotope fractionation during magmatic fractional crystallization.

Sci Adv

December 2019

The Isotoparium, Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA 91125, USA.

Zirconium is a commonly used elemental tracer of silicate differentiation, yet its stable isotope systematics remain poorly known. Accessory phases rich in Zr such as zircon and baddeleyite may preserve a unique record of Zr isotope behavior in magmatic environments, acting both as potential drivers of isotopic fractionation and recorders of melt compositional evolution. To test this potential, we measured the stable Zr isotope composition of 70 single zircon and baddeleyite crystals from a well-characterized gabbroic igneous cumulate.

Introduction: Frequent causes of high anion gap metabolic acidosis (HAGMA) are lactic acidosis, ketoacidosis and impaired renal function. In this case report, a HAGMA caused by ketones, L- and D-lactate, acute renal failure as well as 5-oxoproline is discussed.

Case Presentation: A 69-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department with lowered consciousness, hyperventilation, diarrhoea and vomiting.

Periodic nonlinear sliding modes for two uniformly magnetized spheres.

Chaos

May 2017

Department of Informatics and Computer Science, Idaho State University, Pocatello, Idaho 83209, USA.

A uniformly magnetized sphere slides without friction along the surface of a second, identical sphere that is held fixed in space, subject to the magnetic force and torque of the fixed sphere and the normal force. The free sphere has two stable equilibrium positions and two unstable equilibrium positions. Two small-amplitude oscillatory modes describe the sliding motion of the free sphere near each stable equilibrium, and an unstable oscillatory mode describes the motion near each unstable equilibrium.
