To investigate the use of short-term postoperative endotamponade with perfluorocarbon liquids (PFCLs) for the treatment of giant retinal tear-associated rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). This retrospective study evaluated patients who had 2-stage surgery, which entailed pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) completed in 2 consecutive surgeries spaced 5 days apart, during which a short-term tamponade with PFCL was used (Group 1), and patients who had conventional single-stage PPV with long-term silicone oil (SO) tamponade (Group 2). The study comprised 74 eyes of 68 patients, 52 in Group 1 and 22 in Group 2.

Using Machine Learning to Predict the Duration of Atrial Fibrillation: Model Development and Validation.

JMIR Med Inform

November 2024

Department of Cardiac Arrhythmia Research and Innovation, Graduate School of Medical Science, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, Kyoto, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) is categorized by duration into paroxysmal, persistent, and long-standing persistent types, with longer durations increasing the risk of recurrence during catheter ablation treatment.
  • The study aims to enhance the diagnosis accuracy of AF duration through a predictive model, utilizing data from 272 patients to train a machine learning algorithm.
  • Results showed the model achieved 81.8% accuracy in predicting AF duration, significantly improving cardiologists' diagnostic performance from 63.9% to 71.6% after using the model's insights.

Objective: Most pragmatic trials follow the PRagmatic Explanatory Continuum Indicator Summary (PRECIS-2) criteria. The criteria specify unobtrusive measurement of participants' protocol adherence and practitioners' intervention fidelity but suggest no special monitoring strategies to assure trial integrity. We present experience with adherence/fidelity monitoring in the Pain Management Collaboratory (PMC) and provide recommendations for their monitoring in pragmatic trials to preserve inferences of treatment comparisons.
