The formation of an aluminosilicate gel structure made of alkali-activated materials (AAMs) was conducted through an alkali-activation reaction of the solid precursors (fly ash, metakaolin, and wood ash). Fly and wood ash are by-products of the burning process of coal and wood, respectively. Alkali-activated materials of aluminosilicate origin, made from the different ashes, fly and wood, are very attractive research targets and can be applied in various technological fields due to their thermal stability, resistance to thermal shock, high porosity, high sustainability, and finally, low energy loss during production.

[F]R91150: Improved radiosynthesis and in vivo evaluation as imaging probe for 5-HT receptors.

Eur J Med Chem

January 2025

Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine, Nuclear Chemistry (INM-5), Wilhelm-Johnen-Straße, 52428, Jülich, Germany; University of Cologne, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Cologne, Institute of Radiochemistry and Experimental Molecular Imaging, Kerpener Straße 62, 50937, Cologne, Germany.

Serotonergic 5-HT receptors in the cortex and other forebrain structures have been linked to cognitive, emotional and memory processes. In addition, dysfunction or altered expression of these receptors is associated with neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. [F]R91150 is a candidate radiotracer for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of 5-HT receptors, which showed promising properties in in vitro studies.

Geopolymer Foam with Low Thermal Conductivity Based on Industrial Waste.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Faculty of Materials Engineering and Physics, Cracow University of Technology, Jana Pawła II 37, 31-864 Cracow, Poland.

Geopolymer materials are increasingly being considered as an alternative to environmentally damaging concrete based on Portland cement. The presented work analyzed waste from mines and waste incineration plants as potential precursors for producing geopolymer materials that could be used to make lightweight foamed geopolymers for insulation applications. The chemical and phase composition, radioactivity properties, and leachability of selected precursors were analyzed.

Histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) is an enzyme crucial in epigenetic regulation and protein degradation, with implications in various cancers and neurodegenerative disorders. While HDAC6 is recognized as a promising therapeutic target for Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, its involvement in spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) remains underexplored. Currently, there are no direct methods available for characterizing HDAC6 in the brains of living subjects.

Receptor interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1) crucially upregulates necroptosis and is a key driver of inflammation. An effective PET radioligand for imaging brain RIPK1 would be useful for further exploring the role of this enzyme in neuroinflammation and for assisting drug discovery. Here, we report our progress on developing a PET radioligand for RIPK1 based on the phenyl-1-dihydropyrazole skeleton of a lead RIPK1 inhibitor, GSK'963.
