Serotonin (10(-8) M) produced opposite long-lasting (up to 10 min) effects on acetylcholine-elicited contractions of different buccal mass muscles of Aplysia. Contractions of the dorsal extrinsic muscle and accessory radula closer muscle were enhanced by serotonin; whereas contractions of the ventral extrinsic muscle were inhibited by serotonin. The effect of higher concentrations of serotonin on dorsal and ventral extrinsic muscles was in the same direction as at 10(-8) M but was greater in both magnitude and duration. The phase of feeding-protraction or retraction--during which a muscle is active--is not correlated with the direction of modulation produced by serotonin.

How does repeated stimulation of mechanoafferents affect feeding motor neurons? Monosynaptic connections from a mechanoafferent population in the buccal ganglia to five motor followers with different functions were examined during repeated stimulus trains. The mechanoafferents produced both fast and slow synaptic outputs, which could be excitatory or inhibitory. In contrast, other mechanoafferents produce only fast excitation on their followers.

Stretchable three-dimensional (3D) penetrating microelectrode arrays have potential utility in various fields, including neuroscience, tissue engineering, and wearable bioelectronics. These 3D microelectrode arrays can penetrate and conform to dynamically deforming tissues, thereby facilitating targeted sensing and stimulation of interior regions in a minimally invasive manner. Many soft-bodied animals have extensive peripheral nervous systems (PNS) with significant sensory roles.
