A volatile component of commercially available paint and varnish removers was mutagenic in strains of Salmonella typhimurium TA1535, TA100 and TA98. Levels of dichloromethane in exposure chambers were determined by gas chromatography and were related directly to mutational dose-effect curves observed for the products.

Increased levels and detrimental effects of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on air quality and human health have become an important issue in the environmental field. Benzene is classified as one of the most hazardous air pollutants among non-halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons with toxic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic effects. Various technologies have been applied to decrease harmful emissions from various sources such as petrochemistry, steel manufacturing, organic chemical, paint, adhesive, and pharmaceutical production, vehicle exhausts, etc.

Bis-(2-Chloroisopropyl) ether.

Toxicol Ind Health

Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment, Cincinnati, OH, USA.

Bis-(2-Chloroisopropyl) ether (BCIPE) was used as a solvent for fats, greases, paint, varnish removers, and in spotting and cleaning solutions. However, BCIPE has not been commercially manufactured or used for numerous years. In experimental animal studies, BCIPE is moderately toxic following acute oral, dermal, and inhalation routes of exposure.

Cytogenetic studies have shown that human chromosomes 1, 9, and 16, with a large heterochromatic region of highly methylated classical satellite DNA, are prone to induction of chromatid breaks and interchanges by mitomycin C (MMC). A couple of studies have indicated that material from chromosome 9, and possibly also from chromosomes 1 and 16, are preferentially micronucleated by MMC. Here, we further examined the chromosome-specific induction of micronuclei (MN; with and without cytochalasin B) and chromosomal aberrations (CAs) by MMC.

Electronic address:

Mycotoxin contamination has become a major food safety issue and greatly threatens human and animal health. Patulin (PAT), a common mycotoxin in the environment, is exposed through the food chain and damages the gastrointestinal tract. However, its mechanism of enterotoxicity at the genetic and metabolic levels remains to be elucidated.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the environment have the characteristics of persistence, bioaccumulation, teratogenicity, carcinogenicity, and mutagenicity. Long-term exposure of low-content POPs will also have a certain impact on marine ecosystems and human beings. The contents of three typical persistent organic pollutants[polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polycyclic biphenyls (PCBs)] of surface sediments were analyzed using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to assess the pollution characteristics of persistent organic pollutants in Boao coastal waters.
