The work analyzes the experience of 210 operations for extravasal correction of incompetent valves of profound veins with framework elastic spirals made of lavsan and tantalum in the complex treatment of the varicose disease of lower extremities. The technique of the operation for extravasal correction of incompetent valves with the framework spirals is described. A complete elimination of pathologic reflux of blood through the corrected valve was observed in 56 patients. The framework spirals of lavsan and tantalum enabled avoiding thromboses of veins and scarry deformity of valves.

The increased adoption of three-dimensional (3D) digital prototyping software programs makes it necessary to train novice designers to use these programs efficiently. However, existing studies spanning from engineering to design education indicate that students feel incompetent in understanding 3D digital prototypes and navigating the software, so there is a need to find effective training methods. In the current study, training modules were developed to teach participants fit correction skills through an iterative problem-based learning (PBL) approach.

Lower lip malposition can occur after anterior mandibular resection as a result of the loss of soft tissue lip attachments. We report our technique of cranial suspension of the lower lip with fascia lata slings to improve lip position. Correction of lip ptosis results in cessation of drooling, improved oral intake, and restoration of facial aesthetics.

Purpose Of Review: Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are one of the most common forms of chronic wounds and with nearly half the people having recurrent episodes, this significantly impacts a patient's quality of life. As such, VLU is a chronic disease that requires lifelong maintenance and awareness. A correct diagnosis of VLU is essential for management.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the types of surgical specialties involved in secondary correction of velopharyngeal incompetence (VPI) from 2004 to 2021 using data from 45 hospitals.
  • A total of 7,090 VPI procedures were examined, with plastic surgeons performing the majority (67%), followed by otolaryngologists (31%) and oral and maxillofacial surgeons (12%).
  • It was found that the choice of procedure varied by specialty, with otolaryngologists favoring sphincter pharyngoplasty, which saw a decline in performance by plastic surgeons from 2017 to 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated the reliability of speech data from the Swedish quality registry for children with cleft lip and palate (CLP) at age 10, using a retrospective design involving 121 participants.
  • - Six independent raters compared audio recordings against registry data to assess factors like the percentage of consonants correct (PCC) and velopharyngeal competence (VPC), using statistical methods to measure agreement.
  • - Results showed excellent reliability for PCC and non-oral speech errors, with good to excellent rankings for quality indicators, while VPC showed varying levels of reliability that warrant cautious interpretation in research contexts.
