One-hundred-ninety-four eligible and evaluable patients with histologically confirmed locally unresectable adenocarcinoma of the pancreas were randomly assigned to therapy with high-dose (6000 rads) radiation therapy alone, to moderate-dose (4000 rads) radiation + 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and to high-dose radiation plus 5-FU. Median survival with radiation alone was only 51/2 months from date of diagnosis. Both 5-FU-containing treatment regimens produced a highly significant survival improvement when compared with radiation alone. Forty percent of patients treated with the combined regimens were still living at one year compared with 10% of patients treated with radiation only. Survival differences between 4000 rads plus 5-FU and 6000 rads plus 5-FU were not significant with an overall median survival of ten months. Significant prognostic variables, in addition to treatment, were pretreatment performance status and pretreatment CEA level.

Purpose: To describe the technique and evaluate the performance of MRI-guided transgluteal in-bore-targeted biopsy of the prostate gland under local anesthesia in patients without rectal access.

Methods: Ten men (mean age, 69 (range 57-86) years) without rectal access underwent 13 MRI-guided transgluteal in-bore-targeted biopsy of the prostate gland under local anesthesia. All patients underwent mp-MRI at our institute prior to biopsy.

The aim of this study was to assess the predictive value of pre-biopsy blood-based markers in patients undergoing a fusion biopsy for suspicious prostate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We identified 365 consecutive patients who underwent MRI-targeted and systematic prostate biopsy for an MRI scored Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System Version (PI-RADS) ≥ 3. We evaluated the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), derived neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (dNLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic immune inflammation index (SII), lymphocyte/monocyte ratio (LMR,) de Ritis ratio, modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS), and prognostic nutrition index (PNI).

In the context of chronic liver disease (CLD), sonographic features of hepatic steatosis, cirrhosis, and portal hypertension are discussed and examples are provided. The impact of CLD and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is introduced, providing the rationale for a robust HCC screening and surveillance program for at-risk patients. The American College of Radiology Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System algorithms for screening and surveillance by ultrasound and for the definitive diagnosis of HCC by contrast-enhanced ultrasound are explained, with imaging examples provided.

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammation of gum and tissues that surround and support the teeth. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can be used in the treatment of periodontitis to ease swelling and inflammation. One approach of treating periodontitis is loading the NSAIDs in local drug delivery systems.

We used oscillatory optical tweezers to investigate the microrheological properties of Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (NaPSS; Mw = 70 kDa) polymer solutions with different concentrations from 0.001 mM to 10 mM in terms of elastic modulus G'(ω) and loss modulus G"(ω) as a function of angular frequency (ω) in the range of 6 rad/s to 6000 rad/s. The viscoelastic properties (including zero-shear-rate viscosity, crossing frequency and transition frequency) as a function of polymer concentration, deduced from our primary data, reveal the subtle structural changes in the polymer solutions as the polymer concentration increases from dilute to semi-dilute regimes, passing through the critical micelle formation concentration and the polymer overlapping concentration.
