The short-latency auditory-evoked response was recorded from adult (over 8 wk) and young (16-22 day) mice of the audiogenic seizure-prone DBA/2J (D2) and seizure-resistant C57BL/6J (C6) strains. An auditory complex made up of eleven peaks and troughs was found within the first 20 ms after click stimuli. The latencies of the potentials tended to be shorter in the C6 mice and in the adults of both strains. The ratio of amplitude differences of late to early peaks ('amplitude index') was much larger (P less than 0.01) in D2 mice. The data are consistent with greater neuronal recruitment to acoustic stimuli in the higher-order auditory centers of D2 mice.

Evoked potentials can be used as an intraoperative monitoring measure in neurological surgery. Auditory evoked potentials (AEPs), or specifically brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAERs), are known for being minimally affected by anesthetics, while visually evoked potentials (VEPs) are presumed to be unreliable and easily affected by anesthetics. While many anesthesia trials or intraoperative recordings have provided evidence in support of these hypotheses, the comparisons were always made between AEPs and VEPs recorded sequentially, rather than recorded at the same time.

Ototoxic Effect of Nicotinamide Riboside.

We studied the function of the auditory system in Wistar rats after repeated intravenous administration of nicotinamide riboside (NR). The functional activity of the receptor and retrocochlear parts of the auditory system were assessed by recording short-latency auditory evoked potentials (SLAEPs) and distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) at baseline, immediately after NR administration, and 1 and 2 months later. Repeated intravenous NR administration (cumulative dose of 2700 mg/kg) to Wistar rats has a detrimental impact on the structures within the cochlear section of the auditory system.

Short-latency auditory-evoked potentials (AEPs) were recorded non-invasively in the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus. The stimuli were two sound clicks that were played either monaurally (both clicks to one and the same acoustic window) or dichotically (the leading stimulus (masker) to one acoustic window and the delayed stimulus (test) to the other window). The ratio of the levels of the two stimuli was 0, 10, or 20 dB (at 10 and 20 dB, the leading stimulus was of a higher level).

Benefits of intervention in the Central Auditory Nervous System in individuals with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Objective: To verify the effectiveness of acoustically controlled auditory training in individuals with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Methods: The sample consisted of individuals with Neurofibromatosis Type 1, randomly distributed into two groups, making up the intervention group: individuals undergoing formal auditory training; and the comparison group: individuals who were not submitted to the intervention. Behavioral assessment of central auditory processing and electrophysiological evaluation, composed by Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential and Long Latency-P300 Auditory Evoked Potential, were evaluated in three moments of evaluations: initial evaluation, reevaluation and after four months of reevaluation and comparing the performance between the groups.
