The phosphorescence of singlet oxygen ((1)X( *)) photosensitized by the carotenoidless reaction center (RC) of Rhodobacter sphaeroides R26.1 has been investigated, using H(2)O and D(2)O as the suspending media. To enhance (under neutral conditions) the triplet quantum yield of the special pair P(870) (P) by the radical pair mechanism, the quinone acceptor Q(A) was removed by means of a chemical treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers immobilized the photosynthetic bacterial light-harvesting antenna complex LH2 onto TiO(2) nanoparticles to study its properties.
  • They found that the excited-state lifetime of a specific part of LH2 (B850) decreased when attached to TiO(2), but ruled out the possibility of this being caused by electron transfer.
  • The observed changes in LH2's properties were attributed to structural deformation caused by interfacial interactions, explained through an elliptical exciton model.

The effect of white light on the malate oxidase of Sarcina lutea (Micrococcus luteus) membranes has been examined using a carotenoid-containing and a carotenoidless mutant. At least three photosensitive sites have been detected. Two of these are associated with the malate dehydrogenase complex (malate-menaquinone reductase) and are unaffected by membrane carotenoid.
