Microangiopathic Hemolytic Anemia: A Rare Complication of Acute Pancreatitis.

Korean J Gastroenterol

January 2025

Section of Haematology, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan.

Microangiopathic hemolytic anemia (MAHA) is a rare subtype of hemolytic anemia characterized by elevated hemolytic markers and red blood cell destruction. Though uncommon, MAHA can occur as a complication of acute pancreatitis because of the associated inflammatory response. Patients with MAHA secondary to pancreatitis show favorable outcomes when treated with plasma exchange.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD), a non-communicable condition, stands as the primary cause of death globally. This study seeks to evaluate the predictive power of atherogenic indices, which are recognized for their influence on CVD, alongside a newly developed index encompassing all three principal risk factors for CVD, referred to as the triglyceride-total cholesterol-body weight index (TCBI). The primary outcomes evaluated include both the incidence and mortality rates associated with CVD.

Lysosomal dysfunction and inflammatory sterol metabolism in pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Science

January 2025

Center for Pulmonary Vascular Biology and Medicine, Pittsburgh, Heart, Lung, and Blood Vascular Medicine Institute, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, USA.

Vascular inflammation regulates endothelial pathophenotypes, particularly in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Dysregulated lysosomal activity and cholesterol metabolism activate pathogenic inflammation, but their relevance to PAH is unclear. Nuclear receptor coactivator 7 () deficiency in endothelium produced an oxysterol and bile acid signature through lysosomal dysregulation, promoting endothelial pathophenotypes.

C1orf115 has been identified in high-throughput screens as a regulator of multidrug resistance possibly mediated through an interaction with ATP-dependent membrane transporter ABCB1. Here we show that C1orf115 not only shares structural similarities with FACI/C11orf86 to interact with clathrin adaptors to undergo endocytosis, but also induces ABCA1 transcription to promote cholesterol efflux. C1orf115 consists of an N-terminal intrinsically disordered region and a C-terminal α-helix.

Background: Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), a novel logarithmic index that combines fasting triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations, is associated with the burden of atherosclerosis. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between AIP and coronary artery disease (CAD) risk, severity, and prognosis in populations with and without established CAD.

Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were systematically searched from the inception of each database to August 13, 2024.
