Impulse discharges were recorded from 43 neurons in the nucleus raphe dorsalis of the cat. Of these neurons examine for spontaneous activity, 23 fired in remarkable regular rhythm (clock-like neurons); 18 fired irregularly (non-clock-like neurons); and 2 fired with an unclassified pattern. Almost all clock-like neurons were unresponsive to any kind of peripheral somatic stimuli, while the majority of non-clock-like neurons were excited by both nociceptive and non-nociceptive stimuli or by non-nociceptive stimuli. The somatic receptive fields were large, spanning the entire body.

Recent studies have showed aberrant connectivity of cerebello-thalamo-cortical circuit (CTCC) in schizophrenia (SCZ), which might be a heritable trait. However, these individual studies vary greatly in their methods and findings, and important areas within CTCC and related genetic mechanism are unclear. We searched for consistent regions of circuit dysfunction using a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) meta-analysis, followed by meta-regression and functional annotation analysis.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) effectively treats motor symptoms of advanced Parkinson's disease (PD), with the globus pallidus interna (GPi) commonly targeted. However, its therapeutic mechanisms remain unclear. We employed optogenetic stimulation in the entopeduncular nucleus (EP), the rat homologue of GPi, in a unilateral 6-OHDA lesioned female Sprague Dawley rat model of PD.

TAR DNA-binding protein (TDP-43) and Metastasis Associated Lung Adenocarcinoma Transcript (MALAT1) RNA are both abundantly expressed in the human cell nucleus. Increased interaction of TDP-43 and MALAT1, as well as dysregulation of TDP-43 function, was previously identified in brain samples from patients with neurodegenerative disease compared to healthy brain tissues. We hypothesized that TDP-43 function may depend in part on MALAT1 expression levels.

A single exposure to a stressful event can result in enduring changes in behaviour. Long-term modifications in neuronal networks induced by stress are well explored but the initial steps leading to these alterations remain incompletely understood. In this study, we found that acute stress exposure triggers an immediate increase in the firing activity of calretinin-positive neurons in the paraventricular thalamic nucleus (PVT/CR+) that persists for several days in mice.

The basal ganglia (BG) are an evolutionarily conserved and phylogenetically old set of sub-cortical nuclei that guide action selection, evaluation, and reinforcement. The entopeduncular nucleus (EP) is a major BG output nucleus that contains a population of GABA/glutamate cotransmitting neurons (EP) that specifically target the lateral habenula (LHb) and whose function in behavior remains mysterious. Here, we use a probabilistic switching task that requires an animal to maintain flexible relationships between action selection and evaluation to examine when and how GABA/glutamate cotransmitting neurons contribute to behavior.
