Singer and Blom have recently reported a new surgical method for speech rehabilitation of the alaryngeal patient. The method consists of a tracheoesophageal, puncture (TEP) followed 2 to 3 days later by insertion of a silicone "duckbill" prosthesis which acts as a one-way valve allowing pulmonary air to enter and vibrate the esophagus but preventing aspiration. Along with more rapid acquisition of speech, the advantage of tracheoesophageal speech over esophageal speech is the greater volume of air flow through the vibrating segment of the esophagus, which allows smoother and more prolonged speech. Thirteen of our 18 patients (72%) who have undergone TEP are currently using tracheoesophageal speech. The complications associated with this procedure include the TEP tract closing, tracheal mucositis, stenosis of the tracheostoma, aspiration of the prosthesis, esophageal tear, and aspiration from the esophagus. Although we have encountered several problems, we enthusiastically endorse this procedure since it provides oral communication which is comparable to, and in many cases better than, that of the majority of esophageal speakers.

We examined the morphology of the fNIRS response to three different speech contrasts, namely "Tea/Ba," "Bee/Ba," and "Ga/Ba." : Hypokinetic dysarthria is a speech disorder observed in almost 90% of PD patients that can appear at any stage of the disease, usually worsening as the disease progresses. Today, speech therapy intervention in PD is seen as a possible therapeutic option to alleviate and slow down the progression of symptoms. This study aims to investigate the validity of traditional speech therapy in dysarthria with the aim of improving the quality of life of PD patients, by comparing subjective clinical assessment with objective instrumental measures (IOPI and voice analysis).

Hearing loss in children can have a detrimental impact on their development, thus lowering the psychological well-being of parents. This study examined the amount of parental stress, learned helplessness, and perceived social support in mothers of children with hearing loss (MCHL) and mothers of typically developing children (MTDC), as well as the relationship between various possible contributing factors to parental stress such as learned helplessness and perceived social support. Three questionnaires measured parental stress (Parental Stress Scale; PSS), learned helplessness (Learned Helplessness Scale; LHS), and perceived social support (Perceived Social Support-Friends PSS-Fr and Perceived Social Support-Family PSS-Fa Scale) in 100 MCHL and 90 MTDC.

Method: This cross-sectional study included parents and caregivers of 243 (48% female) individuals (age range = 1-25 years; mean = 8 years 10 months, SD = 5 years 8 months) with genetically confirmed monogenic NDDs (CDK13, DYRK1A, FOXP2, KAT6A, KANSL1, SETBP1, BRPF1, and DDX3X). Parents and caregivers completed the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Third Edition to assess communication, daily living, socialization, and motor skills.
