Among several methods of surgical restoration of voice which were introduced in the last two decades, the one of Staffieri has so far been most successful, though perfection with this technique still remains to be achieved. Question has always been raised as to the nature of function of the neoglottis in the production of voice in these patients. An attempt has been made to study this function with the aid of electroglottography. Results show that the neoglottis functions in some ways similar to the normal human glottis, and as the source of vibrations in these laryngectomized subjects.

Drug abuse can cause severe damage to the human speech organs. The vocal folds are one of the important speech organs that produce voice through vibration when airflow passes through. Previous studies have reported the negative effects of drugs on speech organs, including the vocal folds, but there is still limited research on relevant field.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a short-term (30 minutes) vocal loading task (VLT) on the objective and subjective parameters of voice and determine the restorative strategies of three different vocal exercises performed after the VLT.

Methods: The sample of the study included 30 normophonic women. The protocols that were applied in the study were carried out on three consecutive days.

Vocal Fold Vibration Associated With Inspiratory Phonation-An Acoustic and Electroglottographic Study.

J Voice

December 2024

Department of Duquesne-China Health Institute, John G. Rangos Sr. School of Health Sciences, Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA; Speech Science Laboratory, Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on inspiratory phonation (IP) and its differences from expiratory phonation (EP) in terms of voice quality and glottal vibratory characteristics.
  • Acoustic and electroglottographic analyses were conducted on the vowel /i/ produced by 43 vocally healthy adults to assess voice metrics like fundamental frequency and jitter.
  • Results showed distinct changes in glottal vibration during IP, highlighting its clinical significance and the need for more research to understand its role in diagnosing and treating voice disorders.

Department of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology, Daegu Catholic University, Kyeongsan, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to determine the extrinsic laryngeal muscle activity and vocal economy during two different singing conditions (straight-tone- vs vibrato singing) over a physiologically relevant singing range.

Methods: Thirty professional singers or voice coaches participated in the study. The participants sang a sustained /a:/ vowel for approximately 5seconds, once in straight-tone singing conditions and once more in vibrato.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study explored how Mandarin speakers' voice characteristics change when they are being deceptive versus truthful, focusing on both general trends and gender differences.
  • - A group of 36 participants provided both truthful and deceptive answers during interviews, and their vocal signals were recorded and analyzed, revealing key acoustic and electroglottographic features associated with deception.
  • - Findings indicated that deception in Mandarin involves specific changes in vocal features such as pitch and intensity, with distinct differences observed between male and female speakers, suggesting emotional responses and phonation styles play a role in how deception is expressed.
