The authors present and illustrate most of the ultrastructural abnormalities encountered in skeletal muscle in cases of neuromuscular disease. The diagnostic significance of the changes are discussed but emphasis is laid on the nonspecific character of most of them. For diagnostic purposes, examination by light microscopy remains the preferred approach, but electron microscopy enables the nature and origins of the lesions to be better defined and is a very valuable technique in exploring the pathogenesis of muscular diseases.

Viruses may be regarded as dynamic nucleoprotein assemblies capable of assisted multiplication within cells, and of propagation between cells and organisms. Infectious virus particles (virions) assembled in a host cell are dynamic, generally metastable particles: They are robust enough to protect the viral genome outside the cell but are also poised to undergo structural changes and execute mechanochemical actions required for infection of other cells. This chapter provides a broad introduction to the structural and physical biology of viruses and is intended mainly for virology students.

Introduction: Infection with Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a recognized risk factor for (CT) infection and vice versa. Coinfection of HPV and CT in women is a very common and usually asymptomatic finding that has been linked to increased risk of cervical cancer. It has been demonstrated that CT facilitates the entry of multiple high risk HPV genotypes, leading to damage of the mucosal barrier and interfering with immune responses and viral clearance, which ultimately favours viral persistence and malignant transformation.

The current study shows the first attempts to clarify the gross, ultrastructure, and histological properties of the pecten oculi of the diurnal, visually active glossy ibis, as well as scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) image analysis (Plegadis falcinellus). The pecten oculi was found on the eyeball's posteroinferior wall, adjacent to the optic nerve in both the craniocaudal and posterio-anterior directions. The plicated quadrilateral black pigmented pecten oculi consisted of a base, 10-12 pleats, and an apex.
