Introduction And Aims: Heavy and binge drinking contributes to increased risk and severity of violence in intimate relationships, but its role in the initiation and escalation of intimate partner violence (IPV) is not well-understood. This study explores the dynamics of drinking and IPV from the perspectives of women with lived experience of alcohol-related IPV.
Design And Methods: A qualitative constructivist grounded theory study using interviews with 18 women aged 18-50 years who experienced fear or harm from an alcohol-affected male partner.

Issues: Pubs, bars and nightclubs are central features of recreational night-life in the towns and cities of many countries. The last two decades have seen UK towns and cities regenerated through the provision of night-life environments aimed at servicing youth-focused monocultures typified by heavy drinking, loud music and dancing. Such changes in night-life settings have created major problems with management of alcohol-related violence.

Examination of the change strategies associated with successful long-term sobriety remains an understudied area in addiction research. The following study recruited individuals with long-term sobriety (range 16-25 years continuous abstinence). Subjects (n = 11 were surveyed on demographic information, problem history, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) affiliation, and helping behaviors within several life domains over the course of sobriety.

Numerous observational studies have previously shown that estrogen therapy (ERT) or estrogen/progestin hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can significantly reduce the risk of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) in healthy postmenopausal women by up to 50%. However, due to statistical limitations inherent in these earlier studies, several large randomised trials are now under way. The results from some of these randomised trials are expected sometime in 2005 and will certainly help confirm or refute the present perceived cardio-protective effects of ERT/HRT in healthy menopausal women.
