Oxygen-derived free radicals play an important role in the myocardial injury associated with ischemia and reperfusion. This study was designed to assess whether the protection afforded by a K+ rich, Mg2+ rich cardioplegic solution could be enhanced by the addition of free radical scavengers acting at different levels of the radical generating pathway. Forty isolated isovolumic rat hearts were divided into five groups (n = 8).
