Fluorescence Probe for Detection of Malathion Using Sulfur Quantum Dots@Graphitic-Carbon Nitride Nanocomposite.

Luminescence

February 2025

BioNanocomposite Research Center, Department of Food and Nutrition, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

A novel fluorescence-based sensor has been developed for the sensitive detection of malathion, an organophosphorus pesticide, using sulfur-doped quantum dots (SQDs) embedded within graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) nanosheets. The SQDs were synthesized through a hydrothermal method, whereas the g-C₃N₄ nanosheets were produced via an exfoliation process. The resulting SQDs@g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite demonstrated outstanding performance for malathion detection in food samples, exhibiting a wide linear detection range of 10-120 μM and an exceptionally low detection limit of 0.

Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) is a widely used chemical that accumulates in living things and the environment, especially the aquatic, over time. It is also known as a "forever chemical". Furthermore, different anthropogenic substances are rarely found individually in the environment.

In silico exploration of cholinergic activity and neuroprotection of novel caffeine analogues.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by a cholinergic deficit, prompting conventional therapies to elevate acetylcholine levels as a compensatory measure. Two main strategies involve the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and/or the stimulation of acetylcholine receptors (AChR). Caffeine (CFF), known as a partial agonist of nAChR and an AChE inhibitor, acts as a cholinergic enhancer.

Cognitive dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease results from a complex interplay of various pathological processes, including the dysregulation of key enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), and monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B). This study proposes and designs a series of novel molecules derived from 8-hydroxyquinoline (Azo-8HQ) as potential multi-target lead candidates for treating AD. An exhaustive in silico analysis was conducted, encompassing docking studies, ADMET analysis, density functional theory (DFT) studies, molecular dynamics simulations, and subsequent MM-GBSA calculations to examine the pharmacological potential of these molecules with the specific targets of interest.

Background: Exposure to ionizing radiation is inevitable due to its extensive use in industrial and medical applications. The search for effective and safe natural therapeutic agents as alternatives to chemical drugs is crucial to mitigate their side effects. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of citicoline as a standalone treatment or in combination with the anti-hepatotoxic drug silymarin in protecting against liver injury caused by γ-radiation in rats.
