Background And Objectives: The aim of the study were to demonstrate the possible hemodynamic changes and cerebral blood flow alterations in patients who were positioned from supine to beach chair position; and to detect if the position change causes any cortical activity alteration as measured by the 4-channeled electroencephalography monitor.
Methods: 35 patients were included. Before the induction, mean arterial pressure and patient state index values were recorded (T0).

Brain temperature fluctuations occur in consequence of physiological and pathophysiological conditions and indicate changes in brain metabolism, cerebral blood flow (CBF), brain functions and neural damage. Lowering the brain temperature of patients with traumatic brain injuries achieves considerable improvements. When the human brain is cooled down to 30°C, it switches to a sub functional regime where it can live longer with less oxygen, glucose and other supplies.

The ICU monitoring of CNS function can make a difference in the clinical outcome. No single technique addresses the multiple issues that arise in the ICU setting, especially for the polytrauma patient. Multimodality approaches combining assessment of cerebral blood flow, electrophysiologic parameters, and intracranial pressure, when appropriate, with cardiac and respiratory monitors are being developed at a number of traumatology centers world wide.
