We report our 3-year experience of ureteroneocystostomy without either ureteral stents or vesical catheters. There were 87 ureters repaired in 52 children. Complete followup was obtained in all cases. The operative success rate was 94.2 per cent. The postoperative complication rate was 11 per cent. None of the failures or complications seemed to be directly related to the omission of catheters. The routine omission of catheters postoperative discomfort and markedly shortened the hospital stay.

Objective: Ventricular shunt insertion is a common procedure in pediatric neurosurgical practice. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) account for 1 million nosocomial infections annually and 75% of all hospital-acquired UTIs. A risk factor for CAUTI is prolonged urinary catheterization (UC); therefore, transitory UC during laparoscopic appendectomy (LA), a common practice justified to avoid iatrogenic bladder injury, is believed to be safe. However, data on the incidence of post-operative UC-related complications, including CAUTI, following LA or their avoidance are limited.

Article Synopsis
  • Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare genetic disorder that can worsen during pregnancy, potentially leading to severe complications like pulmonary hypertension (PH) and even death.
  • A 28-year-old woman experienced worsening chest tightness and difficulty breathing during her second pregnancy, ultimately leading to the diagnosis of HHT after genetic testing revealed a mutation linked to the disease.
  • Treatment included a successful procedure to close a pulmonary arteriovenous malformation, which effectively reduced her pulmonary artery pressure and stabilized her condition during outpatient follow-up.
