An analysis has been given of the first 500 cases submitted to the Placental Tissue Registry. Placental lesions were studied in a variety of clinical situations other than the usual complications of pregnancy. There were more infant deaths than infants with a good outcome in the cases of absence of one umbilical artery, amnion nodosum, atheromatosis of the decidual vessels, and acute and chronic villitis. The etiology of chronic villitis remains obscure.

Transcription factor E74 like ETS transcription factor 4 (ELF4), a member of the ETS family, is highly expressed in normal human hematopoietic tissue, ovary, placenta, colon, and certain pathological cell lines. During normal physiological processes, ELF4 regulates differentiation in osteogenic, adipocyte, and neuronal types. It also exerts a critical impact on the development of the immune system.

However, the applications have been hampered by limited organoid size and function as a consequence of a lack of progenitor expansion.
