The initial setting of telomere length during early life in each individual has a major influence on lifetime risk of aging-associated diseases; however there is limited knowledge of biological signals that regulate inheritance of telomere length, and whether it is modifiable is not known. We now show that when mitochondrial activity is disrupted in mouse zygotes, via exposure to 20% O or rotenone, telomere elongation between the 8-cell and blastocyst stage is impaired, with shorter telomeres apparent in the pluripotent Inner Cell Mass (ICM) and persisting after organogenesis. Identical defects of elevated mtROS in zygotes followed by impaired telomere elongation, occurred with maternal obesity or advanced age.

Introduction: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common condition that affects the sexual wellbeing of women and other people with a vagina. Recurrence following individual treatment is frequent and exerts a cumulative burden over time. Researchers at the Melbourne Sexual Health Center have recently completed the first successful trial of male partner treatment (MPT) for BV, demonstrating the superior effectiveness of concurrent MPT in reducing recurrence.

Implementing Australia's new guidelines for appropriate psychotropic medication use in residential aged care: Applying the Consolidated Framework For Implementation Research.

Australas J Ageing

March 2025

Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, The University of Queensland, Dutton Park Campus, Woolloongabba, Queensland, Australia.

Objectives: Accumulating evidence about psychotropic medication-related adverse events has had minimal apparent impact on overall rates of psychotropic medication use across Australian residential aged care facilities (RACFs). Australia's new Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Appropriate Use of Psychotropic Medications in People Living with Dementia and in Residential Aged Care were released in April 2023. This study aimed to identify contextual factors to inform strategies to implement the new Guidelines in Australian RACFs.

Aims: Haptoglobin (HP) phenotype has been reported to modulate fenofibrate benefit on coronary artery disease in type 2 diabetes. It is unknown whether HP phenotype and levels modulate fenofibrate benefit on sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy (STDR).

Methods: In plasma from 8,047 Australasian adults with type 2 diabetes in the FIELD trial, HP phenotype was determined, and HP levels were measured at baseline and after six-week fenofibrate run-in.

Glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness, is characterized by the progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and optic nerve damage, often associated with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Retinoid X receptors (RXRs) are ligand-activated transcription factors crucial for neuroprotection, as they regulate gene expression to promote neuronal survival via several biochemical networks and reduce neuroinflammation. This study investigated the therapeutic potential of 9-cis-13,14-dihydroretinoic acid (9CDHRA), an endogenous retinoid RXR agonist, in mitigating RGC degeneration in a high-IOP-induced experimental model of glaucoma.
