AI Article Synopsis

  • A 14-month-old child with congenital hypoplastic anemia went into temporary remission after receiving steroid treatment but later developed acute megakaryoblastic leukemia.
  • The child's leukemia initially responded well to immunosuppressive therapy, resulting in complete remission.
  • However, the leukemia quickly relapsed, and the child passed away at 23 months, raising questions about the original diagnosis due to the fast progression of the disease.

Article Abstract

A 14-month-old child with congenital hypoplastic anemia, in temporary remission after steroid therapy, developed an acute megakarioblastic leukemia. After complete remission due to immunosuppressive treatment, the leukemia rapidly relapsed, and the child died at 23 months of age. The rapid development of leukemia puts some doubt on the initial diagnosis.

Berry syndrome is a rare combination of cardiac malformations, which is characterized by the following malformations, including the aortopulmonary window, aortic right pulmonary origin, interrupted aortic arch or hypoplastic aortic arch or coarctation of the aorta, and an intact ventricular septum. There are few reviews on prenatal diagnosis of Berry syndrome by fetal echocardiography. We used sequential cross-sectional scanning from apex to bottom of the heart to find aortic right pulmonary origin, aortopulmonary window, and hypoplastic aortic arch.

Objective: 3p deletion syndrome is a rare monosomal disease that encompasses deletions throughout the short arm of chromosome 3. It is often in the distal region (3p25-pter), but variations in breakpoints and a complex clinical manifestation exist, with congenital heart defects being considered rare. We present the first case of hypoplastic left heart syndrome and minor dysmorphic features associated with 3p- syndrome.

Differences/disorders of sex development (DSDs) are a diverse group of congenital conditions that result in disagreement between an individual's sex chromosomes, gonads, and/or anatomical sex. The 46, XY DSD group is vast and includes various conditions caused by genetic variants, hormonal imbalances, or abnormal sensitivity to testicular hormones, leading to varying degrees of under-virilization. A 19-year-old phenotypically normal female from Kakamega, Kenya, presented with primary amenorrhea.

Disruption of developmental processes affecting the fetal lung leads to pulmonary hypoplasia. Pulmonary hypoplasia results from several conditions including congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) and oligohydramnios. Both entities have high morbidity and mortality, and no effective therapy that fully restores normal lung development.

Prune belly syndrome (PBS), or Eagle-Barrett syndrome, is a rare congenital disorder marked by abdominal wall muscle deficiency, urinary tract anomalies, and cryptorchidism, causing significant abdominal wall laxity and functional impairment. This case report discusses an innovative approach to abdominal wall reconstruction in a 19-year-old male patient with PBS and associated conditions, including chronic renal failure and spina bifida. Previously, he underwent distal ureterectomy and vesicoureteral reimplantation at the age of two years to correct urinary tract dilation and bilateral orchiopexy.
