Introduction: Testosterone promotes the initial development of androgen-dependent prostate cancer. This is the basis for androgen ablation treatment, which attenuates, but does not terminate, the malignancy. Instead, it leads to prolactin-dependent malignancy; in which patient death generally occurs within 5 years.

The etiology of peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) remains unestablished, but the involvement of abnormal autoimmunity has been suggested. We report a case of PPCM that was triggered by postpartum thyroiditis. Despite the presence of myocardial damage indicated by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, the patient's cardiac function completely recovered with the addition of bromocriptine to standard therapies.

Twenty-two nonpregnant and 19 pregnant German Shepherd dogs were assigned to either a control group or a suspected short-cycling group, based on the interestrous interval (> or = 6 month and < 5 month, respectively) and data from previous pregnancies. Blood serum concentrations of progesterone and prolactin were determined from days 5 to 60 (day 0 = ovulation) for characterization of luteal function. In pregnant bitches, placental integrity was additionally assessed by relaxin concentrations.

The presence of prolactin receptor and peculiarities of its isoform expression in bile duct cells (cholangiocytes) differentially isolated from rat liver under different conditions were investigated in the present study. Normal cholangiocytes express prolactin receptor at relatively low level comparable to those of some prolactin-dependent tissues. Long receptor isoform is predominant in cholangiocytes but not in hepatocytes.

A method for the collection of mammary biopsies developed previously was refined and used to study the endocrine regulation of bovine milk protein gene expression. Our surgical biopsy method used real-time ultrasound imaging and epidural analgesia to enable recovery of a sufficient quantity of mammary tissue from late-pregnant dairy cows for explant culture in vitro. The time of biopsy was critical for prolactin-dependent induction of milk protein gene expression in mammary explants, as only mammary tissue from cows nearing 30 d prepartum was hormone-responsive.
