Magnesium batteries offer a safer alternative for next-generation battery technology due to their insusceptibility to dendrite deposition. Selective membranes tailored for magnesium-ion conduction will unlock further technological advancement. Herein, we demonstrate fluorine-free magnesiated sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (Mg-SPEEK) selective membranes capable of facilitating magnesium-ion conduction while effectively rejecting soluble organic species.

Membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) is an electrochemical ion separation process that combines ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) with porous carbon electrodes to enhance desalination efficiency and address the limitations of conventional capacitive deionization (CDI). In this study, a cation-exchange membrane (CEM) embedded with a metal-organic framework (MOF) was developed to effectively separate monovalent and multivalent cations in influent solutions via MCDI. To fabricate CEMs with high monovalent ion selectivity, ZIF-8 was incorporated into sulfonated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (SPPO) at various weight ratios.

A new corrole derivative bearing 8-hydroxyquinoline moiety, which was labeled as 8-HQ-Corrole, serves as an efficient fluorescent probe for Mg in the presence of various interferents. This probe 8-HQ-Corrole displayed an ultra-fast response (2 s) to Mg with an impressive detection limit (33 nM) and a significant fluorescence enhancement, accompanying with a blue shift from 667 to 653 nm in fluorescence spectrum. MS and Job's plot analysis indicated that the enhanced fluorescence response was attributable to the formation of 1:2 stoichiometric complex between to Mg and 8-HQ-Corrole involving quinoline nitrogen and oxygen atoms.

We show that a small biotin-binding RNA aptamer that folds into a pseudoknot structure acts as a substrate for bacterial RNase P RNA (RPR) with and without the RNase P C5 protein. Cleavage in the single-stranded region in loop 1 was shown to depend on the presence of a RCCA-motif at the 3' end of the substrate. The nucleobase and the 2'hydroxyl at the position immediately 5' of the cleavage site contribute to both cleavage efficiency and site selection, where C at this position induces significant cleavage at an alternative site, one base upstream of the main cleavage site.
