Four captive lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) were subjected to abdominal ultrasonic scanning. Evidence of progressive infection by the enzootic parasite Echinococcus vogeli was observed in all 4 of them. Ultrasonic scanning revealed abdominal disease, with evidence of both hepatic and bowel involvement. Three gorillas subsequently died. Necropsy results validated the ultrasonic diagnoses.

Regurgitation and reingestion (R/R) and coprophagy are common behaviors exhibited by primates living in human care. To reduce this undesirable behavior in two troops of western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), the diet was modified by increasing fiber (by increasing browse) and decreasing starch (by reducing but not eliminating biscuits). We monitored behavior before, 3 weeks after, and 1 year after the diet change.

The Facial Action Coding System (FACS) is an anatomically based system to study facial expression in humans. Currently, it is recognized that nonhuman animals, particularly nonhuman primates, have an extensive facial ethogram that changes according to the context and affective state. The facial expression of great apes, the closest species to humans, has been studied using the ChimpFACS and OrangFACS as reliable tools to code facial expressions.

SARS-CoV-2 surveillance in captive animals at the belo horizonte zoo, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Virol J

Laboratório de Biologia Integrativa, Departamento de Genética, Ecologia E Evolução, Instituto de Ciências Biológicas, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Background: The pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has not only affected humans but also raised concerns about its transmission to wild animals, potentially creating natural reservoirs. Understanding these dynamics is critical for preventing future pandemics and developing control strategies. This study aims to investigate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wild mammals at the Belo Horizonte Zoo in Brazil, analyzing the virus's evolution and zoonotic potential.

Background: Great apes are a global conservation concern, with anthropogenic pressures threatening their survival. Genetic analysis can be used to assess the effects of reduced population sizes and the effectiveness of conservation measures. In humans, autosomal short tandem repeats (aSTRs) are widely used in population genetics and for forensic individual identification and kinship testing.

Social negotiation and "accents" in Western lowland gorillas' gestural communication.

Sci Rep

October 2024

Cognitive BioCognition, Institute of Cognitive Science, Faculty of Human Sciences, University of Osnabrück, Artilleriestrasse 34, Osnabrück, 49076, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies indicate that chimpanzee infants adapt their gestures based on who they're interacting with and the social context, highlighting the role of both learning and genetics in gestural communication.
  • This research, conducted on Western lowland gorillas, analyzed specific gestures used during play and examined twelve characteristics that define these gestures.
  • Findings show that various social factors, like the signaller's background and the recipient's context, influence how these gestures are formed, suggesting nuances in non-verbal communication akin to human "accents."
