Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Traditionally, garlic (Allium sativum L.; Alliaceae) has been known to boost the immune system. Aged garlic has more potent immunomodulatory effects than raw garlic.

Background: HLA-G displays an immunotolerogenic role and its expressions in grafts/sera are related to allograft acceptance. However, it is still unclear how its transcription level in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) changes during allograft rejection. The aim of the present study was to detect the expression changes of the murine homolog of HLA-G, Qa-2, serially during the whole process of graft rejection with mouse skin transplantation models and to investigate their relationship with the pathological grade of graft rejection and immunosuppressive therapy.

Embryonic stem (ES) cells are pluripotent cells with the potential to differentiate into cells or tissues that may be used for transplantation therapy. Parthenogenetic ES (pES) cells have been recently derived from both mouse and human oocytes and hold promise as a cell source that is histocompatible to the oocyte donor. Because of the importance of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigens in mediating tissue rejection or acceptance, we examined levels of mRNA and protein expression of MHC class I proteins, as well as several MHC class I antigen processing and presentation chaperones in mouse ES cells derived from both fertilized (fES) and parthenogenetic (pES) embryos.

BALB/c mice are susceptible to the induction of Graves' hyperthyroidism. To investigate the susceptibility of BALB/c substrains of mice to the induction of hyperthyroidism, we immunized BALB/cJ and BALB/cByJ mice with an adenovirus expressing amino acid residues 1-289 of thyrotropin receptor (TSHR). The data presented in this article showed that 17 of 26 (65%) BALB/c and only 4 of 30 (13%) BALB/cBy mice developed hyperthyroidism.

We reexamined expression patterns of one of the best characterized mouse class Ib MHC molecules, Qa-2. Transcripts encoding glycosylphosphatidylinositol-linked and soluble forms of Qa-2 are expressed in all organs except brain. The membrane-bound Qa-2 proteins are detectable, to varying degrees, in many cell types of immunological interest: on professional antigen-presenting cells capable of inducing anti-Qa-2 allogeneic responses, on thymic epithelial cells essential for T-cell positive selection, on mature as well as immature thymocytes, in immunologically privileged sites (testis/spermatazoa), and on cells implicated in mucosal immunity (lymphoid-derived and epithelial gut cells and hepatocytes).
