In chick, the tectal and posterior commissures form a continuous band of axons lying in the dorsal aspect of the meso-diencephalon. In midline sagittal sections, two zones can be clearly defined. The rostral zone (RZ) contains about 290,000 axons of which 32% are myelinated. The caudal zone (CZ) contains about 911,000 fibers of which 12% are myelinated. The majority of unmyelinated fibers in RZ and CZ are between 0.15 and 0.40 micrometers in diameter. The majority of myelinated fibers in both RZ and CZ are less than 1 micrometer in diameter. It is likely that RZ corresponds to the posterior commissure while CZ corresponds to the tectal commissure.

Tectal plate tumors are a rare subset of midbrain tumors in pediatric populations. They are slow growing and low grade, with indolent and subtle manifestation unless they cause hydrocephalus. We present a tectal tumor in an 8-year-old girl (Video 1).

The superficial layers of the mammalian superior colliculus (SC) contain neurons that are generally responsive to visual stimuli but can differ considerably in morphology and response properties. To elucidate the structure and function of these neurons, we combined extracellular recording and juxtacellular labeling, detailed anatomical reconstruction, and ultrastructural analysis of the synaptic contacts of labeled neurons, using transmission electron microscopy. Our labeled neurons project to different brainstem nuclei.

Objective: Surgery for midbrain pilocytic astrocytoma (PA) remains a formidable challenge. To facilitate decision-making and achieve a better outcome in the management of patients with midbrain PA, the authors have proposed a novel radiological classification of midbrain PAs with long-term follow-up.
Methods: Fifty-seven midbrain PA patients who underwent surgery at Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, from January 2008 to June 2021, were reviewed.

Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling is the morphogen signaling that regulates embryonic craniofacial and neural tube development. G protein-coupled receptor 161 (Gpr161) is a negative regulator of Shh signaling, and its inactivation in mice results in embryo lethality associated with craniofacial defects and neural tube defects. However, the structural defects of later embryonic stages and cell lineages underlying abnormalities have not been well characterized due to the limited lifespan of Gpr161 null mice.
