The cytogenetic action of a volatile dimethyl p-benzoquinone found in the natural secretion of an arachnid (Acanthopachylus aculeatus Kirby) was studied in cultured human peripheral leukocytes and in mouse bone-marrow cells. Continuous and pulse treatments carried out in vitro, as well as experiments performed in vivo, induced different chromatid and chromosome aberrations suggesting that this chemical has clastogenic properties. The biology of the animal and the possible role of one of the components of its secretion as a natural mutagenic agent are discussed.

This study proposes the heterojunction photocatalyst, Sn-doped TiO/Ti-doped SnO (herein named SnTiO), as a promising alternative to pure TiO. SnTiO demonstrates improved light harvesting efficiency over TiO by generating longer-lived electron-hole (e-h) pairs, while also displaying a smaller band gap compared to pure TiO. Consequently, we show that it is a promising candidate for the photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of As to the less toxic and more readily removable form As.

The pH dependence of the free energy level of the flash-induced primary charge pair PI was determined by a combination of the results from the indirect charge recombination of PQ and from the delayed fluorescence of the excited dimer (P*) in the reaction center of the photosynthetic bacterium , where the native ubiquinone at the primary quinone binding site Q was replaced by low-potential anthraquinone (AQ) derivatives. The following observations were made: (1) The free energy state of PI was pH independent below pH 10 (-370 ± 10 meV relative to that of the excited dimer P*) and showed a remarkable decrease (about 20 meV/pH unit) above pH 10. A part of the dielectric relaxation of the PI charge pair that is not insignificant (about 120 meV) should come from protonation-related changes.

Pterostilbene (PTS), which is abundant in blueberries, is a dimethyl derivative of the natural polyphenol resveratrol (RES). Several plant species, including peanuts and grapes, also produce PTS. Although RES has a wide range of health benefits, including anti-cancer properties, PTS has a robust pharmacological profile that includes a better intestinal absorption and an increased hepatic stability compared to RES.
