Left ventricular muscle volume (LVMV) was measured echocardiographically in 688 normal children ranging in age from 5 to 15. Lean body surface area (BSA) was obtained from height and lean body weight, which was estimated using triceps skinfold thickness, upper arm circumference and body weight. Regression lines of LVMV against BSA or lean-BSA were compared between boys and girls. There was statistically significant sex difference in regression lines when LVMV were plotted against BSA (p less than 0.005), but this difference disappeared when plotted against lean-BSA. We conclude that the sex difference of LVMV with a similar BSA originates from the difference of lean body weight between boys and girls.

Although research on the relationship between lean body mass and blood pressure (BP) has been inconsistent, most studies reported that measures of lean body mass are associated with a higher risk of hypertension. We explored relationships between body composition (fat and skeletal muscle mass) and BP in 1162 young adult African women. DXA-derived measures of whole body, central and arm fat mass were associated with higher systolic and diastolic BP, while leg fat percentage was associated with lower systolic and diastolic BP.

Background: Obesity is a chronic disease associated with increased risk of multiple metabolic and mental health-related comorbidities. Recent advances in obesity pharmacotherapy, particularly with glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists (RAs), have the potential to transform obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) care by promoting marked weight loss, improving glycaemic control and addressing multiple obesity-related comorbidities, with added cardio-renal benefits. Dual agonists combining GLP-1 with other enteropancreatic hormones such as glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) have also been developed in recent years, leading to greater weight loss than using GLP-1 RAs alone.

Seeking optimal non-pharmacological interventions for sarcopenia: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Aging Clin Exp Res

January 2025

Department of General Internal Medicine, Guang'anmen Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Beijing, China.

Background: With the acceleration of aging, sarcopenia has become a reality of concern today. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of various non-pharmacologic interventions and find the optimal interventions for sarcopenia.

Methods: PubMed, Medline OVID, EMBASE, Scopus, and Cochrane were searched from 1 January 2000 to 25 October 2023, with language restrictions to English.

Background: It is not yet clear to what extent the physiological regulatory mechanisms that maintain core body temperature are reflected by changes in resting energy expenditure (REE). Particularly in indirect calorimetry with a canopy, the effects of short-term temperature exposures have not yet been investigated. This can be of relevance for the determination of REE in practice.

Alterations in serum concentrations of visfatin and betatrophin in dogs with diabetes mellitus.

Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Koret School of Veterinary Medicine, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, P.O. Box 12, Rehovot, Israel. Electronic address:

Canine diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia. Visfatin and betatrophin are adipokines involved in the pathophysiology of insulin resistance and deranged lipid metabolism, and are also altered in obesity. We hypothesized that visfatin and betatrophin serum concentrations are altered in diabetic dogs, irrespective of their body condition.
