A cell line derived in 1956 from normal dog kidney is described. The cells are epithelial, contact-inhibited, and can be maintained in the same culture vessels for period of more than 2.5 yr. Karyologically, the cells are hypodiploid with a modal number of 72 as opposed to the diploid number of 78. The karyotype indicates male origin of the cells and clonal derivation of extant cultures due to the presence of two marker chromosomes in all metaphases observed. At the 159th passage the dog kidney (DK) cells did not produce tumors in athymic rats. At least 13 viruses of various types produced transmissible cytopathogenic effects in the DK cells, including all of the human influenza viruses investigated.

Background: Urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) is a biomarker for the early diagnosis of AKI.
Objectives: To evaluate uNGAL in dogs with non-associative immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) and to evaluate whether uNGAL correlates with disease severity markers, negative prognostic indicators and outcome.
Animals: Twenty-two dogs with non-associative IMHA and 14 healthy dogs.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) are small, non-coding RNAs that play a crucial role in gene regulation, making them potential biomarkers for various diseases. In the field of veterinary medicine, there is a growing interest in exploring the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of miRNAs in kidney diseases affecting dogs and cats. This review focuses on the use of urinary miRNAs as biomarkers for chronic kidney disease (CKD) in these companion animals.

We previously isolated a cDNA clone for galactosylceramide expression factor 1, which is the rat homologue of hepatocyte-growth-factor-regulated tyrosine kinase substrate (HGS) and induces galactosylceramide expression and morphological changes in COS-7 cells, and reported that overexpression of HGS induced morphological changes in canine kidney epithelial MDCK cells. HGS is a component of the endosomal sorting complexes required for transport machinery that mediates endosomal multivesicle body formation. In this study, the overexpression of HGS induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition and caused transformation in MDCK cells, whereas the overexpression of a coiled-coil domain of HGS inhibited induction of epithelial-mesenchymal transition by HGF stimulation.

Urine-derived mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (USCs) could be a valuable source of cells in regenerative medicine because urine can be easily collected non-invasively. In this paper, USCs were isolated from both healthy dogs and dogs affected by chronic kidney disease (CKD), and the efficacy of collection methods (spontaneous micturition, bladder catheterization, and cystocentesis) were compared. Isolated cells were cultured in the presence of platelet-rich plasma and studied for their proliferative capacity (growth curve, doubling time, and colony forming unit), differentiation properties, expression of mesenchymal markers, and Klotho protein.

A 3-year-old spayed male mixed-breed Labrador presented to the Emergency and Critical Care Unit with lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, a recent history of presyncopal episodes, and severe exercise intolerance. On admission, the patient had bradycardia, low blood pressure, and mild abdominal pain. Serum biochemistry information revealed severe hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, hypoglycemia, and mildly increased liver and kidney parameters.
