Optical-based sensing techniques and instruments, such as fluorometric systems, absorbance-based sensors, and photoacoustic spectrometers, are important tools for detecting food fraud, adulteration, and contamination for health and environmental purposes. All the aforementioned optical equipments generally require one or more low-frequency Lock-In Amplifiers (LIAs) to extract the signal of interest from background noise. In the cited applications, the required LIA frequency is quite low (up to 1 kHz), and this leads to a simplification of the hardware with consequent good results in portability, reduced size, weight, and low-cost characteristics.

Selective neuromodulation of peripheral nerves is an emerging treatment for neurological diseases that are resistant to traditional drug therapy. While nerve cuffs with multichannel stimulation can be made by many varied methods, they usually require specialized microfabrication or additive manufacturing equipment. A truly low-cost and effective method of creating a custom cuff has not been accessible to researchers to prototype new methodologies and therapies in acute studies.

Deep learning techniques underpinned by extensive data sources encompassing complex pavement features have proven effective in early pavement damage detection. With pavement features exhibiting temperature variation, inexpensive infra-red imaging technology in combination with deep learning techniques can detect pavement damages effectively. Previous experiments based on pavement data captured during summer sunny conditions when subjected to SA-ResNet deep learning architecture technique demonstrated 96.

In satellite remote sensing applications, waterbody segmentation plays an essential role in mapping and monitoring the dynamics of surface water. Satellite image segmentation-examining a relevant sensor data spectrum and identifying the regions of interests to obtain improved performance-is a fundamental step in satellite data analytics. Satellite image segmentation is challenging for a number of reasons, which include cloud interference, inadequate label data, low lighting and the presence of terrain.

Bistable liquid crystal (LC) shutters have attracted much interest due to their low energy consumption and fast response time. In this paper, we demonstrate an electrically tunable/switchable biostable LC light shutter in biological optics through a three-step easy-assembly, inexpensive, multi-channel shutter. The liquid crystal exhibits tunable transparency (100% to 10% compared to the initial light intensity) under different voltages (0 V to 90 V), indicating its tunable potential.
