Throughout the tropical world, in Africa. Asia and Latin America, the construction of water impoundments, for irrigation and other purposes. in areas of endemic water-related diseases, has inexorably intensified community levels of infection, and also created new areas of transmission. The clearest 'indicator' disease is a schistosomiasis, but other are involved such as malaria and the filariases. An assessment for the future suggests a worsening situation because of population growth, the demand for food production, and the increased technological capacity of the "bulldozer revolution' to effect earth impoundments. The typical sectoral dichotomy in which a department of agriculture creates a disease outbreak through its development activity, leaving its counterpart department of public health to cope on he curative basis, where possible, is strongly deplored. A policy position is offered whereby disease prevention measures are integrated with development projects from the beginning, and infrastructural investment and operational costs for health maintenance are identified and incorporated in the total benefit-cost analysis. The need for the communications network on ecological and health effects is pointed out; and a typology for registration of dams is offered in support of policy implementation.

The timely identification of areas where man-made radionuclides migrate through water streams is highly important for the territory of the former Semipalatinsk Test Site since the aquatic environment is currently a source of secondary contamination of environment. This article presents research findings on radioactively contaminated Lake Kishkensor located at the Semipalatinsk Test Site territory. As a result of this research, a new locally contaminated spot was discovered in the vicinity of the "Balapan" test site.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are emerging contaminants of concern whose fate and transport in environmental media are incompletely understood. In the 1960s, PFAS were dumped in the House Street Disposal Site, an unlined landfill on the crest of a glacial end moraine near Rockford, Michigan, USA. In 2017, PFAS were discovered in groundwater and subsequently, a network of monitoring wells delineated a 2 mi (3 km) PFAS plume migrating downgradient toward the Rogue River.

As the human population in urban areas is continuously growing, urbanization is one of the greatest threats to biodiversity. To mitigate the negative effects, the inclusion of blue zones (aquatic habitats) in modern urban development practices is strongly recommended, as they could be beneficial for the local biodiversity conservation. Odonata are a flagship group and are widely used in freshwater conservation as ecological indicators of habitat integrity and health.
