Phosphine-borane complexes are recently developed redox-active drugs that are neuroprotective in models of optic nerve injury and radioprotective in endothelial cells. However, a single dose of these compounds is short-lived, necessitating the development of sustained-release formulations of these novel molecules. We screened a library of biodegradable co- and non-block polyester polymer systems for release of incorporated phosphine-borane complexes to evaluate them as drug delivery systems for use in chronic disease.

Aims: SYNERGY is a novel platinum chromium alloy stent that delivers abluminal everolimus from an ultrathin poly-lactide-co-glycide (PLGA) biodegradable polymer. This study evaluated the in vivo degradation of the polymer coating, everolimus release time course, and vascular compatibility of the SYNERGY stent.
Methods And Results: SYNERGY stents were implanted in arteries of domestic swine.

Background: Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) is widely used as a plasma substitute for improving microcirculation. A major side effect of HES is severe pruritus caused by HES deposits in the skin. Since specific changes are difficult to see in paraffin sections, electron microscopy is the golden standard technique in the diagnosis of HES-induced skin disease.
