Hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a rare liver mesenchymatous tumor with an epithelial aspect developed from endothelial cells with a lack of validated therapeutic options at metastatic stage. Metronomic chemotherapy has been described as an anti-angiogenic therapy leading to the depletion of circulating endothelial progenitors. We report the results of two patients treated for metastatic hemangioendothelioma with metronomic cyclophosphamide chemotherapy.

Ethical questions raised by in utero therapeutics with stem cells and gene therapy.

Fetal Diagn Ther

September 2004

Comité Consultatif National d'Ethique, Paris, France.

The plasticity of living beings is limitless and our guidelines are constantly upset. Several ethical questions arise with this new in utero therapeutic approach: (1) The possibility of a mother giving truly informed consent when she is divided between a proposal to terminate her pregnancy and resignation to the birth of an abnormal child. How can she choose between three therapeutic proposals, when two of them are unbearable and only one carries some hope? (2) If a dead fetus is used as a donor of hepatic or hematologic stem cells, should this be based on the mother's consent? If so, what status is given to this fetus? Is it possible to take into consideration at the same time the growing demand to recognize the fetus as a person and his gift? (3) It is important to separate the services that receive dead fetuses from those that perform the injection of fetal stem cells so that the fetus does not become a mere therapeutic tool.

Mesenchymatous hamartoma is a benign liver tumor characteristically found in childhood, particularly during the first two years of life. A case of mesenchymatous hamartoma detected in a 23-year-old female during a study for non specific abdominal disturbances is presented. Imaging techniques showed a large mass in the right hepatic lobe with hypodense areas of cystic appearance.

Primary intrahepatic malignant nonepithelial tumors are very rare in children and account for 2% of all malignant mesenchymatous tumors under the age of 15 years. Clinical presentation, radiologic features, and histologic types are not unequivocal. The predominant role of surgery takes place either initially in small localized tumors or later, after initial reductive chemotherapy.

[Different varieties and anatomopathological description of primary tumors of the liver].

Rev Prat

September 1992

Laboratoire d'anatomie pathologique, hôpital Pellegrin, Bordeaux.

The different types of primary hepatic tumors are examined, focusing on their macroscopic and histologic features. A large variety of neoplasms can be observed, derived from the different components of the liver. Benign (adenoma, focal nodular hyperplasia) or malignant (hepatocellular carcinoma) epithelial tumors of hepatocellular origin are very common.
