Microgram amounts of nickel as 63NiCl2 were administered intratracheally to male rats. Regardless of time after instillation, the lungs and kidneys retained the greatest concentration of 63Ni, and 21 days after dose administration they were the only organs where 63Ni was still measurable. Urinary excretion was the main excretion route with 72% of the initial body burden eliminated by the urine at one day. By day 21, almost all 63Ni was excreted in the urine (96.5% of the initial body burden). The lungs retained 29% of their initial (35 min) burden at day 1, decreasing to 0.1% on day 21.

Atypical mycobacteria can cause rare and atypical infections of the hand. We report the case of an immunocompetent 46-year-old male initially presenting with thumb felon and progressively developing symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, tenosynovitis of multiple fingers and a sporotrichoid lymphocutaneous infection causing chronic cutaneous lesions all over the body. A wearable detector to monitor visible light intensity is realized by the restrained photochromism of a hydrogel composite containing light-responsive spiropyran with hydroxyl groups (SPOH). When exposed to visible light, the SPOH experiences a ring-opening to a ring-closed transition accompanied by discoloration from red to yellow. Unlike in the solution, the photochromism/discoloration rate is strongly correlated to the cross-linking points.

Background: Despite an epidemic of end-stage kidney disease in the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, disparities in access to kidney transplantation persist. The journey to a successful kidney transplant is long, with an initial suitability assessment required before waitlist-specific activities begin. In an Aboriginal Community Controlled renal service, we aimed to: (i) design and implement a continuous quality improvement (CQI) approach to transplant suitability assessment, (ii) provide transplant suitability assessments for all patients of the service, (iii) describe what temporary contraindications to kidney transplantation should be the focus of health service improvements, (iv) explore participant experiences with the suitability assessment process, and (v) use our findings to inform pre- and post-transplant model of care development within Kimberley Renal Services.
